TSN Adapters/Bridges: The Key to Unlocking Legacy Interface Compatibility

Moving to a Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) digital backbone is a critical part of modernizing aerospace and defense systems. This shift is possible due to the use of TSN adapters and/or bridges, which integrate legacy systems/interfaces (ARINC-429, MIL-STD-1553, RS422/485, Digital IO and analog I/O, and CAN bus) into Ethernet networks. This capability allows existing subsystem to function as part of a modern, deterministic network architecture without the need for complete redesigns, thus saving investment and functionality and enabling scalable upgrades.

These new pathways and the added value they bring is not just the ability to stream legacy protocols as TSN compatible, it is the interoperability, the added bandwidth, and timing control they bring. The ability to bridge TSN to diverse systems supporting real time, high precision operations allow for synchronized data exchange and even sensor fusion. This is critical in aerospace platforms, for instance, where flight operations data and mission systems data need to be reliably switched and/or separated. Embracing TSN allows organization to replace complex network configurations with a unified, high performance modular backbone which simplifies wiring and improves system resilience.

UEI has TSN solutions that best address this evolution using profiles such as IEEE 802.1DP, 802.1DG, 8021BA, and even IEC 60802. Our TSN adapters or bridges facilitate ease of integration, portability, and reusability across current and future aircraft fleets maximizing lifetime value. With a wide variety of I/O for modern avionics solutions, UEI can support advanced sensor fusion and enhanced sensor fusion needs as fleets evolve. They also support advanced modeling, configuration, and reduce a major integration hurdle – so designs on UEI hardware can be moved directly to in-field use without additional modifications. With many right-sized chassis and low power system solutions, UEI enables ad-hoc processing and distributed access to networked data, aiding platforms that operate in constrained space and need operational agility, dependability, and processing power.
