Application Story: UEI and Aerospace Design Manufacturing Test Bed

An aerospace design manufacturer recently completed construction of an aerospace test bed facility. The facility is a massive test bed structure designed to support a new generation of efficient and sustainable engine and propulsion systems. The data systems inside of this facility are more capable and complex than any of the manufacturer's existing test beds and have the capacity to collect and store more than 10,000 parameters of data from an intricate lattice of sensors. Application Story: UEI and Hydroacoustics Inc. (HAI)

Hydroacoustics Inc. (HAI) designs specialized products for a variety of aquatic applications, including communications, seismic exploration, oceanographic data collection, and ocean surveillance. HAI allied with Ocean Power Technologies (OPT) to develop an innovative oil and gas subsea chemical injection system, called the SCIU (Subsea Chemical Injection Unit). Subsea chemical injection techniques are used to mitigate the diminishing effects of buildup in piping and pumping systems used in subsea oil production operations. To design a viable product, HAI needed data acquisition (DAQ) and control hardware that was both rugged and precise.

Application Story: UEI, NASA Water Storage System (WSS) & MIL-STD 1553

The International Space Station (ISS) has a complex water system designed to store and create clean water for its residents, capable of storing as much as 530 gallons of water at any given time. NASA’s ISS upgraded to a new Water Storage System (WSS) and is equipped with state-of-the-art technology. WSS improves the resupply/waste water management and iodinated water storage capabilities of the ISS. When designing the new WSS, NASA needed a way to manage communications, control and monitoring systems within the WSS for simplified management. Securing the right data acquisition and control hardware for this task was critical to maximizing the potential of the new WSS.

Application Story: UEI's Modified Commercial-off-the-Shelf (COTS) Sensor Interface Unit (SIU) & US Navy

The US Navy’s LCAC (Landing Craft Air Cushion) fleet is a vital part of Navy operations and is responsible for transporting weapons systems, equipment, cargo and personnel of the Marine Air/Ground Task Force both from ship to shore and across the beach. The LCAC is designed to make it uniquely suited for this mission. However, the fleet is over three decades old and faces obsolescence challenges. To solve these challenges, the Navy introduced the LCAC SLEP (Service Life Extension Program), which would overhaul the LCAC’s existing legacy systems with newer equipment. To do so, the Navy needed rugged, reliable, and flexible data acquisition and control hardware.

Framatome is a French nuclear reactor developer largely owned by the French state. When Framatome’s Safety I&C (Instrumentation and Controls) system maintenance and testing tools, which ensured the platform’s integrity and reliability, began to encounter obsolescence challenges, Framatome knew it was time for an upgrade. UEI equipped Framatome's I&C maintenance system with the I/O hardware it needed to perform accurate, modern, and robust systems testing; all of which was protected from any future product obsolescence issues with our long-term 10-year availability guarantee.

Nasa's SAFFIRE program was designed to study large flame growth and material flammability limits in microgravity, which will be essential to the design and construction of future spacecraft and the development of informed protocols for dealing with fire emergencies in space. Application Story: UEI and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI)

As part of a recent project by a U.S. Navy lab to study ice cracking events in the Arctic circle, the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) researchers developed a cabled DAQ system that would collect seismo-acoustic measurements and help better understand sea ice strength and behavior. WHOI researchers needed hardware that could withstand Arctic temperatures and reliably collect data. UEI equipped WHOI’s system with the hardware it needs to withstand arctic conditions and collect key ice cracking data, and ensure the project’s success. Learn more here.

HUD (Heads-Up Display) was created in an effort to make flying simpler and safer. The new HUD is a smart in-flight display system that includes a projection unit, clear glass display combiner, and a display processer unit, allowing pilots to see critical flight data in the same line of sight as outside terrain. Application Story: UEI, NASA VMS & Flight Simulation

NASA’s VMS (Vertical Motion Simulator) complex is a high-fidelity flight simulation system with the capacity to travel vertically and laterally with six degrees of freedom. The VMS provides real-time piloted simulation and realistic sensory cues through six ICAB (Interchangeable Cabin) systems. These systems can be modified to simulate any vehicle, including those still in the design stage — which makes it an invaluable tool for the research and development of new flight vehicles. VMS is also routinely used to train astronauts and pilots, as it provides a no-risk, low-cost hyperrealistic flight experience.

Application Story: UEI, NASA Water Storage System (WSS) & MIL-STD 1553

The International Space Station (ISS) has a complex water system designed to store and create clean water for its residents, capable of storing as much as 530 gallons of water at any given time. NASA’s ISS upgraded to a new Water Storage System (WSS) and is equipped with state-of-the-art technology. WSS improves the resupply/waste water management and iodinated water storage capabilities of the ISS. When designing the new WSS, NASA needed a way to manage communications, control and monitoring systems within the WSS for simplified management. Securing the right data acquisition and control hardware for this task was critical to maximizing the potential of the new WSS. Learn more.

Application Story: UEI, NASA VMS & Flight Simulation

NASA’s VMS (Vertical Motion Simulator) complex is a high-fidelity flight simulation system with the capacity to travel vertically and laterally with six degrees of freedom. The VMS provides real-time piloted simulation and realistic sensory cues through six ICAB (Interchangeable Cabin) systems. These systems can be modified to simulate any vehicle, including those still in the design stage — which makes it an invaluable tool for the research and development of new flight vehicles. VMS is also routinely used to train astronauts and pilots, as it provides a no-risk, low-cost hyperrealistic flight experience. Learn more.

Application Story: UEI & LCAC SLEP

The Navy’s Landing Craft Air Cushion (LCAC) are rugged amphibious vessels designed to bring warfighters, troops, and critical supplies ashore from surface ships. As part of the LCAC Service Life Extension Program (SLEP), the Navy needed a hardened rehost system to mitigate obsolescence and increase dependability for 75 LCAC crafts in the fleet. UEI offered a commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) solution to meet the stringent requirements of the Navy.

Application Story: UEI & Aurora Flight Sciences

Aurora Flight Sciences is a company that seeks to create advanced aircrafts by utilizing autonomous systems and composite manufacturing. The Aurora Centaur aircraft offers the option for piloted, remote, or hybrid operation which improves safety and control capabilities, which is strengthened further by the triplex and duplex redundancy in its critical flight systems. The Centaur also has a small footprint and boasts a low life-cycle cost while still providing a high quality of performance. This optional “pilot-in-the-loop” approach is ideal for controlled and uncontrolled airspace. Application Story: UEI Solutions & Navy LSODS

Naval Carrier Fleet Information Systems are complex networks of systems that include aircraft launch and recovery, onboard the ship operations, and data management including wind speed, landing signals, radar, and more. The Landing Signal Officer Display System (LSODS), a critical component of the information platform, manages carrier air traffic through a set of displays, controls, and processing equipment. A new flexible, deployable, and easy to maintain data and control system was needed for LSODS to manage video imagery, radar data, and other mission-critical information to guide the launch and recovery of aircraft aboard carriers. Application Story: UEI Cubes Used in NASA’s Flow Boiling & Condensation Experiment (FBCE)

To address the increasing need for power as space missions become longer and more complex, NASA’s FBCE developed a two-phase thermal management system which would be smaller, lighter, and remove heat more efficiently than the single-phase system. By comparing microgravity data against Earth’s gravity, and other force parameters, FBCE helped determine the minimum flow criteria for ensuring gravity independent flow boiling and condensation. Ultimately, the goal for FBCE was to examine how boiling and condensation differ in microgravity to aid in designing future heat-transfer systems. Read how UEI supported this application here.

Modbus

The MODBUS messaging protocol was developed by Modicon in 1979 and is used to establish master-slave/client-server communication between intelligent devices. It is a defacto standard, truly open and the most widely used network protocol in the industrial manufacturing environment. UEI has the ability to act as a stand-alone MODBUS server. C/C++

The UEIDAQ Framework provides a set of C++ classes to easily interface your C++ programs with UEI data acquisition devices. The UEIDAQ framework also comes with an ANSI-C API.

Windows

UEIDAQ Framework library uses the same API to access any devices from PowerDNA Distributed Ethernet I/O families. Using UEIDAQ Framework library dramatically cuts the amount of code needed to perform data acquisition and control tasks. UEI supports all versions up to the most current Windows 10.

The UEIDAQ Framework provides a set of C++ classes to easily interface your C++ programs with UEI data acquisition devices. The UEIDAQ Framework also comes with an ANSI-C API.

Health & Usage Monitoring (HUMS)

UEI enables your sensor-based monitoring system to measure theperformance and health of your mission critical components.

Military Aviation

UEI offers a wide variety of I/O solutions designed to meet the demanding requirements of military aviation. Whether you need a distributed DAQ system, a local test platform or an embedded controller/recorder we have the system you need.

OPC UA

UEI supports OPC and OPC-UA applications. OPC Servers are dependent upon the Microsoft operating systems, while OPC-UA is our stand-alone implementation that removes dependency. The application of the OPC standard interface makes possible interoperability between automation/control applications, field systems/devices etc. The UEIDAQ Framework comes with an OPC server to interface to an OPC client while OPC-UA is a stand-alone product. LabVIEW

LabVIEW is the graphical development environment for creating flexible and scalable test, measurement, and control applications rapidly and at minimal cost. The LabVIEW graphical dataflow language and block diagram approach naturally represent the flow of your data and intuitively map user interface controls to your data, so you can easily view and modify your data or control inputs. The UEIDAQ Framework comes with an extensive library of Virtual Instruments for LabVIEW to easily interface your LabVIEW program with UEI data acquisition devices.

Linux

UEI offers extensive Linux drivers/support and example code for both Cube and RACK Chassis. These are factory developed and supported drivers. Though many DAQ firms have ignored the Linux market, or relegated their support to unofficial user forums, UEI provides complete drivers for their data-acquisition hardware, including factory support. All Linux drivers are included with the product and are available for download on our web site.

Engine Test

UEI’s systems are well suited for many types of engine test applications. Whether you are collecting high-speed dynamic data or monitoring vibration, temperature and strain, UEI has your application covered.

Space 4.0

UEI I/O systems support space applications from the launch pad to the International Space Station and everywhere in between. Whether your application is military, NASA, or for one of our many commercial space customers; UEI’s Cubes and RACKtangles have become a staple in this industry.

EPICS

The Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System (EPICS) is a software environment commonly used to develop distributed control systems for particle accelerators, telescopes and other large experiments. EPICS also provides SCADA capabilities.

MATLAB

IoT

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a networked system of interconnected physical objects that have the capability of sharing data with each other and also with a cloud service for archiving and analysis. IoT objects must conform to the Internet Protocol Suite to be considered “things” in terms of the IoT. UEI's Linux-based PACs come preinstalled with Eclipse Mosquitto (MQTT) which implements the MQTT machine-to-machine (M2M) protocol. QNX

UEI's support for QNX takes a special form due to that OS's architecture. The QNX SDK includes all the definition files and libraries you need to link into an application. Further, you get startup code as well as example programs with C source code that illustrate both software-clocked and hardware-paced analog inputs. QNX allows applications with root privileges to directly access PCI bus addresses and resources including interrupts. Thus the driver contains no read()/write()/ioctl() routines. We've implemented the PowerDAQ/DNA for QNX data acquisition and control driver as a library to link with user back-end applications (server).

Python

This enables faster development, easier debugging and access to Python's growing open-source libraries. Additionally, for added versatility, the Python API works across Windows and Linux networked platforms and on our standalone embedded UEIPAC.
